What role does vital energy (dosha’s) and balance play in well-being?
Health and well-being is maintained when the vital energies of the body are in balance. There are 3 vital energies (dosha’s) in each one of us known as vata, pitta and kapha. This combination is unique to each individual and is known as a constitution or prakruti.
Each person’s constitution is usually dominated by a dosha or combination of two doshas. Each dosha has certain attributes and describes our individual characteristics, inherited traits, our likes and dislikes and our tendencies. This combination of dosha’s which is responsible for our physical, mental and emotional makeup makes each of us a unique individual.
Disturbances in the mind and body doshic balance can be caused by diet, emotional imbalances, inappropriate or inadequate exercise. By identifying and maintaining the unique constitution, an individual can maintain his or her health and well-being.
What are the dosha characteristics?
Vata means 'to move' or 'to enthuse.' Vata people have alert minds, a refreshing imagination, and a lot of energy, but they can burn out quickly through over activity. They are very changeable and resist routine which is exactly what they need to ground them. Vata types feel pain far more easily and loud noises will distress them. Arthritis, constipation, abnormal blood pressure, rheumatic pains and mental problems are all signs of a disturbed vata.
Pitta means 'to cook' or 'to burn.' Pitta people are skilful and bright. They are fairly predictable in their routines as they eat three meals a day and sleep eight hours a night. They are prone to a hot and sweaty body, and hair going grey early. They tend to be sharp witted and passionate but can be intense and short tempered. When out of balance digestive and skin disorders can arise.
Kapha means 'to stick' or 'keep together'. Kaphas are usually relaxed, graceful, and affectionate. They tend to gain weight easily and need a lot of sleep and warmth. They procrastinate and are slower to learn but have excellent long-term memories. Signs that a kapha dosha needs rebalancing are flabby muscles, slow talking, laziness, and feeling run down.
